The Route: Wyoming to Alaska Trucking Guide

This guide outlines a common route for commercial truck drivers traveling from Wyoming to Alaska. Note that this route focuses on land-based travel to the Alaskan Highway. Ferry options are available from Washington State if desired, which significantly changes the route.

Phase 1: Wyoming to Montana & Alberta

Our journey begins in Wyoming. From most locations in Wyoming, the primary route will involve taking I-90 North towards Montana. As you approach Montana, stay on I-90 until you reach Billings. In Billings, you'll transition to I-94 East for a brief stretch before turning North onto US-87. Follow US-87 North into Montana and towards the Canadian border.

Once in Montana, US-87 will lead you towards the border crossing at Coutts, Alberta. Ensure your documentation is in order for crossing into Canada.

Phase 2: Alberta to British Columbia & Yukon

Upon entering Alberta, the highway designation changes to AB-4. Continue north on AB-4 to meet AB-16 (Yellowhead Highway) westbound. Follow AB-16 West through Alberta and into British Columbia.

Once you are in British Columbia, AB-16 becomes BC-16. Follow BC-16 West until you reach the junction with BC-37 just east of Terrace, BC. Turn North onto BC-37.

Follow BC-37 North to the Cassiar Highway junction, continuing on BC-37 which effectively becomes the Cassiar Highway. The Cassiar Highway is a notable stretch through remote areas.

The Cassiar Highway crosses into the Yukon Territory, where it becomes YT-37. Continue on YT-37 North to the junction with the Alaska Highway (YT-1/AK-2) near Watson Lake.

Phase 3: Yukon to Alaska

Turn west onto the Alaska Highway (YT-1/AK-2) heading towards Alaska. Continue following the Alaska Highway through the Yukon and into Alaska. Your final destination will dictate the specific route within Alaska.

Compliance & Permits

Crossing the border into Canada requires specific documentation. Ensure you have proper paperwork for both the driver and the cargo.

  • International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA): All states and Canadian provinces along the route participate in IFTA, meaning you’ll need IFTA stickers and will be responsible for filing quarterly fuel tax reports.
  • International Registration Plan (IRP): Similar to IFTA, IRP ensures proper vehicle registration reciprocity between states and provinces.
  • Canadian Permits: Depending on the weight and dimensions of your load, permits may be required from the provinces you transit through. Contact Alberta Transportation and British Columbia's Commercial Transport for permit information.

Risks & Hazards

This route presents several challenges that drivers need to prepare for:

  • Seasonal Weather: Winter conditions in the Rockies and across the Yukon and Alaska can be severe. Expect snow, ice, and reduced visibility. Chains may be required, and road closures are common. Summer brings the risk of wildfires and potential road closures due to smoke.
  • Wildlife: Be aware of large animals such as moose, elk, and bears, especially during dawn and dusk.
  • Remote Areas: Portions of the route, particularly along the Cassiar Highway, are very remote with limited services and cell phone coverage. Plan your fuel stops and rest breaks accordingly. Carry extra supplies in case of emergencies.
  • Road Conditions: The Alaska Highway can have sections with uneven surfaces, frost heaves, and gravel sections. Reduce speed and be prepared for rough conditions.
