The Route: Idaho to Michigan

This route guide outlines a common and efficient path for commercial truck drivers traveling from Idaho to Michigan. Please remember that this is a general guide; always consult up-to-date road conditions and adjust your route as needed based on real-time circumstances, load specifics, and company policy.

Our primary route will utilize Interstate highways as much as possible for efficiency. We'll start assuming you are in Boise, ID.

  1. Idaho (Boise to Wyoming): Begin by taking I-84 East towards Twin Falls. Continue on I-84 East until it merges with I-86 East. Follow I-86 East until it connects with I-15 North/East near Pocatello. Merge onto I-15 North/East toward Idaho Falls and ultimately to Montana. Continue on I-15 North/East until you cross into Montana.

  2. Montana to Wyoming: From I-15 North/East in Montana, transition onto I-90 East and continue towards Billings and the Wyoming border. Continue on I-90 East into Wyoming.

  3. Wyoming to South Dakota: Continue on I-90 East through Wyoming. You'll eventually cross into South Dakota.

  4. South Dakota to Minnesota: Stay on I-90 East across South Dakota. This will lead you into Minnesota.

  5. Minnesota to Wisconsin: Continue on I-90 East through southern Minnesota until you reach the Wisconsin border. Continue east into Wisconsin on I-90 East/I-94 East.

  6. Wisconsin to Illinois: Stay on I-90 East/I-94 East. The interstates will split outside of Milwaukee, at which point you should continue on I-94 East towards Chicago and into Illinois.

  7. Illinois to Indiana: I-94 East becomes the Bishop Ford Freeway through Chicago. Continue on I-94 East through Chicago and enter Indiana.

  8. Indiana to Michigan: Stay on I-94 East through Indiana and then into Michigan.

  9. Michigan: Continue on I-94 East to your specific destination in Michigan.

  • Idaho: Port of Entry near Declo on I-84 East.
  • Wyoming: Numerous Weigh Stations along I-80 and I-90.
  • Illinois: Illinois DOT Weigh Stations along I-94.

Permits:

  • Kentucky: While not directly on the route, trucks operating with weights exceeding the state's limits may need a KYU number if they frequently travel in Kentucky at other times. Check for permits if you are routing through Kentucky at any point.
  • Illinois: Trucks operating in Illinois must have valid IRP registration and IFTA fuel tax license.

Risks & Hazards

This route presents several seasonal weather risks:

  • Winter (November - March): Expect snow and ice conditions, particularly in the Rocky Mountain regions of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, as well as the plains of South Dakota and Minnesota. Reduced visibility, road closures, and chain requirements are possible. Pack chains and monitor weather forecasts.

  • Summer (June - August): Extreme heat can be a concern across the plains. Ensure your cooling systems are in good working order and monitor tire pressure to prevent blowouts. Thunderstorms and high winds are also possible in the Midwest.

  • General: Construction zones are common throughout the summer months across all states. Be prepared for delays and adjust your speed accordingly. Watch for wildlife, especially in rural areas.
